Fewer players, new game?

Why the industry is consolidating and what strategies insurers can use in response

In this study, you will find out what is behind the merger reports of recent months and years. To provide answers, we have analyzed the European insurance markets and evaluated economic indicators and demographic data.

The result proves that the media impression is not misleading: a moderate consolidation is indeed taking place in the industry.

The number of European insurers has declined over the past five years, particularly in the life segment. This trend can be observed in almost all markets, although the pace varies greatly.

In the second and third chapters of the study, we analyze the underlying drivers and what this consolidation means for small and medium-sized insurers. The good news is that insurers have alternatives to giving up their autonomy. We have examined the two key options for insurers in detail.

As in previous years, we have also analyzed how the 25 largest European insurers are faring. Unlike before, the life segment has also recorded strong growth in turnover. Our study also reveals the reasons behind this and why profits have been practically exploding.
