Future of Operations – outlook on 2033

Market study of German insurance companies

Initial situation

The operations departments of insurance companies are increasingly becoming the focus of strategic decisions. The industry has to balance different needs: On the one hand, it is important to ensure operational stability, but on the other, extensive changes are unavoidable. Present challenges such as technological innovation, processing backlogs and the lack of qualified employees are being tackled every day.

Against this background, insurers need to ask themselves: How can we position our operations departments in a sustainable and future-proof manner? Which trends will prevail and shape the industry in the long term?

Study design

The zeb market study “Future of Operations” provides answers based on a real-life sentiment analysis of 20 German insurers carried out in 2025 with a view to the year 2033. The survey was based on three overarching subject areas that have an impact on the original Target Operating Model for Operations:

  • Customer interaction

  • Work organization
  • Work efficiency

Ideas for action

As a result, we derived six central theses for the “Future of Operations” target image and identified three concrete ideas for action for enabling it in the short to medium term.
