Digital euro: a payment revolution? 

In June 2023, the EU Commission went public with a go decision and a legislative proposal on a digital euro with the aim to create a complementary near-cash legal tender for the digital era.

Fostering the independence of Europe’s payment system, creating a new monetary policy instrument and providing a new platform for innovation seem to dominate the European Union’s motivation for the digital euro.
